Sophie Cocheteux has been co-founder and artistic director of Celestial Mekaniks since 2016. She is a multidisciplinary, committed artist who follows her instincts and never backs down. Directing is her main occupation besides acting, singing, making art installations and teaching French and Drama.
Born and raised in the Roubaix region of France, she obtained a licentiate degree in French literature before devoting herself to theatre. She graduated from KULeuven in Science of Language and the Institut National des Arts et Spectacles (INSAS) in Brussels, where she directed a docudrama on Alzheimer's, "A mon Grand-Père", nominated for the 2008 Belgian theatre awards.
As co-founder of La Bande asbl, she committed herself to Brussels to collaborate on socio-artistic projects and she also often worked there for the theatre company "Madame Véro".
The underground scene then brought her to Ghent. From there, she entered into collaborations with J-P Bouchard-Rees (music and sound), Robert Leiner (music), Alexander Coppenolle (lighting) and Barbara Van Praet (dramaturgy).
Under the non-profit organisation Celestial Mekaniks, theatre projects are made with non-native migrants learning Dutch. From these collaborations came Ezelsbrug (2016) Orakel (2018) and Het Blauwe Uur (2021). Performances were performed under her direction at Bij' De Vieze Gasten, NTGent Arca, Minardschouwburg, cc De Schakel, Kortrijk Schouwburg and De Centrale.
In 2020, Sophie directed Jeroen Theunissen's play - Time Travel Congress- which was published as a video on "Podium aan huis". She has also directed the Gilgamesh Epic with students from OKAN Provincial Summer School in Ghent.
Her playground is also her battleground. She is part of a group of 11 comediennes in the group Fritüür, which defends women's freedom and the survival of the chipmunks. Since 2011, they have performed 200 times in Belgium and France.
Since 2016, Sophie has played in De Propere Fanfare of De Vieze Gasten.
After training in Portugal, Sophie also works for Contact Clown in Care - NeuzeNeuze - as gentle clown since 2022.
